U.S. Army officer, Governor of and Senator from Michigan, and Cabinet officer. Correspondence, military documents, and scrapbooks of clippings. About 50 papers deal with Alger's Civil War military service; the bulk of the collection covers his term as Secretary of War during the Spanish-American War, with emphasis on the campaigns in Cuba. Includes about 2000 letters from persons in public life. Important correspondents include James G. Blaine, Grenville M. Dodge, Marcus A. Hanna, Benjamin Harrison, Garret A. Hobart, John D. Long, William McKinley, Nelson A. Miles, Redfield Proctor, Theodore Roosevelt, William R. Shafter, and Leonard Wood.

Alger (1836-1907) served as U.S. Senator from Michigan, 1902-1907. He was a Republican. (Information from Senators of the U.S.). Scripps served as Michigan Senator from the Third District, 1903-1904. He was born in England in 1835 and came to the U.S. in 1844. Scripps worked as a reporter for the Chicago Tribune in 1857.
